Product Description

The SW-150 Subwoofer from Wharfedale offers a level of performance previously unheard of in its class, striking the perfect balance between power and sound quality. Revolutionary drive units, amplifier modules and filter stages feature on every model of Wharfedales SW Series of subwoofers. In each model it is possible to switch off all filters and allow the AV processor to control the effective frequency range of the subwoofer. This is preferable in high-end systems.
Revolutionary drive units, amplifier modules and filter stages feature on every model. They strike the perfect balance between power and sound quality, offering remarkable sound pressure levels, yet retaining enough control to be considered audiophile in quality. This is possible only through the use of some space-age materials and cutting-edge technology in our drive units.

But what is beauty without practicality
Solid, well-engineered power amplifiers, dedicated to the production of low frequency energy are used across the range. Power is targeted specifically at the most important section of the bass spectrum, with very little loss and a controlled roll-off allowing for superb integration with all hi-fi and home cinema systems. The filter section controls the integration with your main speakers and ensures the transition is seamless. Designed using six discrete circuits, signal purity is regarded as paramount. Each circuit has a different crossover frequency (35Hz to 85Hz in 10Hz steps). The filter is 12dB/octave on the SW-150 and 24dB/octave on the larger models. Finally, the Tri-lam cone is revolutionary in terms of technology and performance which is one of the most advanced cones ever seen in a moving-coil loudspeaker, coupled with an elongated voice coil with a maximum excursion of 24mm.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2025Sound is deep from this. I have it turned down as it can drown out my speakers. Good value for money.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2025I've been really impressed with this sub since I bought it. As you can see in the photos, I've got it set up in my 12ft x 6ft mancave, mated to my B&W 601 bookshelves and Blusound powernode. Even though there's not much room for it to breath (ideally it would be positioned it further away from the wall etc) it still packs a serious punch; bass is deep, tight and controlled, especially when streaming MQA/Flac files. Looks the biz as well in carbon. For the money its a wise choice for audiophiles that don't have a lottery jackpot budget to invest in a sound system.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2024I have had this sub woofer for over a year now.
Looking back, more years than I care to remember, Wharedale were my first hi-fi speakers way back in the early 1970s. This little sub woofer, for the money I paid, has been great value.
The only downside, like the majority of the sub woofers on the market, the cross-over and volume controls are on the back of the unit. Why-oh-why do sub woofer manufacturers do this? To my mind, it makes much more sense to put these two simple control knobs on the front of the sub woofer to allow sound tweeks to be performed without having to drag the unit out from the wall, and fiddle with these two controls?
Anyway, if you want a small, cheap, great sounding sub woofer, then look no further.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 April 2021I had bought some Wharfedale Diamond 220 speakers to put through a decent Yamaha amp and although the speakers are great, I immediately noticed they lacked low end. Bumped the bass on the amp to the max and it still wasn't there and thought I should have got bigger speakers, Bought this puppy and it's completely altered everything, not a horrible booming house-shaking bass, just a satisfying subtle oomph which you can adjust to your taste and your music. Very nice minimalistic design and unbelievable value for money. I'm not here to plug Amazon, but I was putting You Tube through my system and of course the quality of stuff people have uploaded varies enormously. Amazon Prime's catalogue is remarkably extensive and of course, as it's licenced and you have to pay for it - not much I might add - the difference in quality when put through even a middling system like mine is remarkable and well worth the money in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2023Can't believe how good this sub is for the price, I was going to buy two of them but there's no need whatsoever it would be serious overkill one is more than enough. I have them linked with two yamaha 8" studio monitors and the set up sounds amazing, the sub fills in the low down bass that the monitors can't reach. I only use for music so not sure what it would be like for surround set up. What I love is you can get a rumbling bass at lower volumes. I've just got to be careful I don't upset my neighbours too much!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 April 2025Superb, has totally transformed my listening experience
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2020Still bedding this speaker in. Had it a few weeks. The sound quality has improved markedly over these weeks.
I have this sub matched with 2 Wharferdale Diamond 9.1 speakers. The amp is an AUNA AV-CD508, supposedly 600W output. Sound is fed from my desktop PC to the amp then through the sub to the regular speakers using banana plugs.
I was unsure whether to award 4 stars or 5. I opted to give 5 because this sub does kick out a good booming bass, though fullness seems to depend on the music played. I listen to streamed music so suspect recording quality is more the issue than is speaker quality.
Reggae, elektro, reggaeton and bass boosted music come through well. Bass in pop music comes through less well. Bass in movies can be room shaking at times yet other times lacking the vital thunderous experience. I feel that recording quality is more the issue than the sub's capability to produce crisp bass.
This sub could do with a remote control. The 2 nobs to adjust the volume and the crossover frequency are on the back of the sub. Volume is no issue because my amp has a separate control for bass in an easy to reach location. But, the crossover on the sub needs to be adjusted when I switch from music to video or, less so, when I change music genre. The location of the crossover control nob is my only real annoyance with the sub. In all other respects I'm happy with it.
Overall, this is a nice looking sub with good solid thunderous room shaking bass performance (don't worry, you can turn down the shakes with the volume nob at the back of the sub). I would buy this sub again.
Edit 18th Jan 2025:
I should have updated this review a couple of years ago. The sub looks really nice and it has a great bass output. Room shaking. When it works. I've not had a peep out of it for about 2 years. Problems developed within the first year of purchase. The sub would randomly cut out. I thought my amp might have been at fault but I recently bought a new amp and there is still no sound from this sub. Apparently the relays in this sub model are a known point of failure. It's very common.
I sent a support request to Wharferdale today. Hopefully Wharferdale will offer help to fix the fault.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 October 2020It looks very well made, a bit more on the heavy side than I anticipated. The quick set up instructions were for a stereo and I was connecting to an AV receiver. The full booklet explained how towards the end but it wasn't difficult. Setting the sound levels was real easy but took a few goes to it just to my taste. Looking forward to it bedding in and the sound improving over the next few weeks.
