My freestanding 7 burner BBQ had succumbed to rust, the plates over the burners no longer rested on the lugs which had rusted through, the holes in the lid had rusted through so could no longer hold the grill and the heat was uneven. It was a bit of a beast and a lot of money gone, after maybe 5 years.
I purchased the George Forman a the beginning of this summer to see how it performed. It was a lot cheaper than the old type BBQ, takes up a fraction of the space, is fully portable, and could quickly clean and easily be stored. My initial plan was to buy another if this one worked out. Not necessary, this was fine for cooking for up to 8 people. I would like a grill rather than a plate but the plate does make for more even cooking , less flare-ups and it is easier to clean.
It is bigger than I expected but is easily stored on a shelf in my shed. The metal is thicker and will take a lot longer to rot through than my previous BBQ. There are no lugs for the cooking plate to rest on, instead, the base profile is shaped to accommodate them and I get back some of my garden.
I didn't buy the stand, I use a wrought iron table to stand it on, when in use
